June is No Smoking Month by virtue of Proclamation 183, to encourage Filipinos to stop smoking and raise more awareness on the dangers and ill-effects of such habit.
This year’s theme: Tobacco: Threat to our Life; Vape and Smoke-Free Communities Para sa Healthy Pilipinas!
In recognition of National No Smoking Month, Nicorette held a media roundtable together with a medical experiment to share the importance of quitting smoking and the benefits and effectiveness of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to a quitter.
Former smoker and Nicorette user John Matthew Uy was present at the event to share his smoking journey and how Nicorette helped him quit smoking for good.
“Quitting can really be challenging but I must face them because my main reason to quit smoking is for my family; I’m already a dad now and I want to be there for them especially for my son. Aside from this, I also want to improve my health so I can be with my family for a long time,” says John Matthew Uy.
“When I decided to quit, I really didn’t know where to start. I asked the help of my family for support as well as my friends and they suggested Nicorette to me. It wasn’t until then that I finally got the answer to successfully quit smoking for good.”
“Tobacco contains a highly addictive substance called nicotine that stimulates the brain to give pleasure when smoking. In addition, tobacco itself carries many other harmful components and due to addiction, a smoker keeps inhaling these substances that are detrimental to their health,” says pulmonologist Dr. Lenora Cañizares-Fernandez.
She added: “The damage of smoking is not limited to the lungs but to other organs of the body as well, as it is also a known risk factor for cancers and cardiovascular disease. Apart from this, smoking increases complications of diabetes and other lung diseases.”
Throughout their smoking habit, a smoker may have attempted to quit smoking at least once, but the journey towards quitting is not an easy path to take as it is challenging to deal with the uncontrollable craving, withdrawal symptoms, and relapses.
