As we celebrate the past triumphs of five years of storytelling, we unveil our latest brainchild: Fast Five. In this column, we take a quick look at five things that span the range of the fantastic, the flippant and the facetious. That’s a lot of Fs!

Five Minutes from Cubao to Makati

Cubao to Makati, so says Google Maps

Since it’s our birthday, we appreciate the wisdom that it’s the thought that counts. Hearing President Rodrigo Duterte’s promise that his administration will cut the travel time from Cubao, Quezon City to Makati to just five minutes is a boost of inspiration and relief for long-suffering motorists and commuters. So hey, for many people, it’s the thought that counts. Sometimes, just the idea that someone cares is enough.

An inter-agency group called Task Force CubMa (Cubao-Makati) has been formed to try to make this possible. The MMDA is taking the lead.

But is it even possible? Let’s crunch the numbers. The distance between Cubao to Makati via EDSA is roughly between 12 to 15 kilometers. Even if EDSA turns into a ghost town, a vehicle has to travel 180 kilometers per hour just to bridge the distance in five minutes. Unless the hyperdrive technology of Star Wars has been invented, is that even safe at all?

Or maybe we are just taking this too literally? Perhaps it’s an exaggeration? We wouldn’t be surprised. Remember when he promised that illegal drugs will disappear in three to six months? Don’t hold your breath.

Game Five! The Warriors Escape Jurassic Park

One more loss to the Toronto Raptors and the Golden State Warriors would have been prime candidates to be disposed to the nearest pawnshop.

But what did Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson’s last-minute three-pointers say to the God of Championship Death? Not today.

Those who bet a lot of money on the Toronto Raptors to win the championship because they had an imposing 3-1 NBA Finals lead? Not today.

While Kawhi Leonard and his stone-cold superstar skills felt like the Night King with an overgrown reptile blasting through the wall of the Warriors, it wasn’t enough and the series is extended.

But Kevin Durant’s cameo will have to end in this game. He suffered a new Achilles tear, on top on his existing calf injury. This takes months to recover. Will he be back with the Warriors next year? That’s quite the chilling factor for GSW. How about those fans who cheered when he went down during the second quarter? That was cold and not cool.

Will Gazini Ganados Be Our 5th Miss Universe?

With recent Miss Universe victories by Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray, the Philippines has emerged as a battle-hardened pillar of beauty pageants. The 23-year-old and half-Palestinian Gazini Granados from Talisay, Cebu is next in line in this glamorous game of thrones.

Does she have what it takes to be our new Queen, first of her name and fifth of the Universe? It’s a difficult road ahead, so remember, be gentle and thou shall not bash. We wrote about their challenges before. Check it below…

Five Countries Have Sent Their Garbage to the Philippines

Yes, it’s not just Canada and Hong Kong. There are also trash-filled container vans from Australia here in the Philippines. South Korea sent some of theirs in 2018. And Japan too, way back in 1999.

Hindi po kami basurahan.

In our own little ways, we must reduce the garbage we contribute to our environment. Take a page from one of our authors Tricia Zafra who has committed herself to using pasadors instead of sanitary napkins. Learn more about it here…
