In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven society, love and relationships are more complex than ever. With fewer face-to-face getting-to-know dates to more dating apps and social media shaping our connections, the search for genuine love remains universal. And that was what Repertory Philippines’ ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’ perfectly captures.

Refreshed by the First Lady of Philippine Musical Theater Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, this musical comedy embodies the highs and lows of modern romance, from awkward first dates to the challenges of marriage. Played by four actors – we got to see Gian Magdangal, Krystal Kane, Marvin Ong, and Barbara Jance during the show – in twenty relatable vignettes, this explores the struggles and triumphs of love.

I’ve wanted to see this show during its first run last year, and I was so impressed by the stellar performances of the cast. Gian Magdangal and Krystal Kane definitely stood out in their roles, bringing their characters to life with such passion and authenticity. Their chemistry is undeniable, and it’s clear that they fully understood the intricacies of the characters they portrayed. I also loved how Marvin Ong and Barbara Jance’s voices and emotional portrayals complemented and blended with each other, and how their roles in different vignettes tickled and tugged our heartstrings.

From the first vignette to the last, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change didn’t just entertain—it resonates. The musical is packed with humor, but it also has poignant moments that made me reflect on my own views of love. The musical direction by Ejay Yatco really shines, and his ability to bring together such a cohesive sound throughout the performance was something I thoroughly appreciated. The choreography by Stephen Viñas added just the right amount of flair to each vignette, keeping the energy high without detracting from the emotional depth of the story. It’s truly a testament to the talented team behind the scenes.

Watching the audience’s reactions really made me realize just how universal this show is. Even though I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change has been around for over two decades, it still speaks to us today. I’ve always thought the way the show balances humor with real emotional depth is what makes it feel timeless.

By the end of the show, what really stuck with me was this thought – ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’ presents the different faces and phases of love. May it be a whirlwind romance, parents’ affection towards their children, a relationship between two women or men, emotions after almost a lifetime of marriage, or a love found during a funeral, love will always be love and it will always be wonderful, even if it doesn’t look and feel the same way for everyone.

The show runs just until March 9, 2025, at the REP Eastwood Theater in Eastwood City Walk, but hears to hoping for another rerun!
