Why SubSelfie? is a project of Filipino journalists and communication professionals about our stories behind the scenes of our daily experiences and adventures beyond the newsroom. We started in June 2014 and we are the first online magazine for Filipino millennials.

Instead of pictures, our selfies come in the form of articles. We  dig deep in our experiences to give you relevant and meaningful narratives.

Who We Are

Toni Tiemsin

Toni Tiemsin  is‘s EIC. After his five-year stint in GMA News producing and writing investigative reports, feature segments, scripts for various newscasts, and hourly and breaking-news programs, he is now with the Public Relations realm of Ogilvy & Mather as Media Relations Manager.

Lian Nami Buan

Lian Nami Buan is the Associate Editor of She is a multimedia reporter too for Rappler, covering the Justice Beat. For, Lian leads the #SubStory and #TanawMindanao segments. She was a news producer for GMA News for six years before she moved to England to take up her Masters in Digital Journalism at the Goldsmiths University of London. Her areas of journalistic interests include human rights, particularly indigenous people, women and migration. Whenever she has money, she travels to collect feelings for writing material. Bam Alegre

Bam Alegre is the founder of and writes from time to time as a guest contributor. He is a News Reporter for GMA News (2012) and a Special Lecturer for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the East (2015). He was also part of the team that won GMA News the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for the news coverage of super typhoon Yolanda (2013). Previously, he worked behind the scenes as a Segment Producer for State of the Nation with Jessica Soho and 24 Oras (2009-2012). Hon Sophia Balod

Hon Sophia Balod is a storyteller. She was previously a News Producer of special reports and features for GMA Network and Reuters. She is a media fellow of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and recipient of 2016 Gawad Agong and Sarihay Media Awards for Excellence in News Reporting  on  the plight of indigenous people and environmental issues. Dawnavie Dadis

Dawnavie Dadis is a Segment Producer for DocuCentral, the special projects arm of ABS-CBN Integrated News and Current Affairs. Doing the laundry is her form of mediation. The shower is her territory for musings. She is a story and a story-teller. She previously worked for GMA News as a Segment Producer for News TV Quick Response Team (QRT) with Jiggy Manicad and as a News Producer for the morning newscasts Unang Hirit and Kape’t Balita. Ephraim Aguilar


Ephraim Aguilar is a ukester, a vegetarian and a striving minimalist. Presently, he is an Executive Producer for News TV Live and Balitanghali Weekend in GMA News TV Channel 11, and a News Producer for State of the Nation with Jessica Soho. Apple Gamboa is a marketing content writer for an Australian-based company in the Philippines. She was previously an interview and field producer for GMA News programs Quick Response Team and News to Go. She was also a producer of lifestyle TV shows and documentaries. JM Nualla is the Social Media Head of He is presently a Producer of The Source on CNN Philippines. He also serves as an Assistant Professor in iACADEMY, teaching scripwriting and mentoring thesis projects. Previously, he was a Segment Producer for the GMA News Special Assignments Team and Senior Producer/Online Content Manager for Claire Delfin Media. Tricia Zafra

Tricia Zafra is a humanitarian worker. After 11 years of working as a broadcast journalist, she joined Médicins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) as Communications Officer. She is taking up her Master’s Degree in Psychology in the University of the Phlippines, Diliman. She is a vegetarian, a painter, and a certified open water scuba diver; 2018 OFW Gawad Parangal Outstanding Field Reporter; 2016 OFW Gawad Parangal Favorite Female TV Newscaster; 2016 Certificate of Creative Excellence recipient of the US International Film and Video Festival Awards; 2014 Best Culture-Based TV Reporter of NCCA’s 1st Gawad Sagisag Kultura ng Filipino Awards, and; 2012 Plaque of Recognition recipient of the 4th National Statistics Month Media Awards. Justin Joyas

Justin Joyas is a contributor for and was part of the original roster that founded the site. Presently, he is Assistant Social Media Manager for GMA News Social Media Team.     I read the “Why Manila is better than London” article and became curious about the blog. Finding out you guys are behind few of my favorite shows is so awesome!     i come across this site sometime ago when i clicked on the link of an article from gmanews but somehow i didn’t bookmark it and lost track of it. your site is just so hard to find, google is no help. i had to dig the gmanews site to look for the article again and i almost gave up lol. had this bookmarked now. cheers. lol.
